Learning to seal professionally: from a practice bead to a first job

A straight line on a bench is a start. On site you must decide whether a joint can be sealed, how to reach it and what to do if the substrate fails.

Build a sample board

Make a vertical run, an inside corner and a junction between two materials. Keep the data sheet and record conditions, preparation and date. Once cured, check where any separation occurs and ask someone experienced to review it.

Before opening the cartridge, try the Presch silicone gun in the tightest corner. Check you can turn your wrist and release pressure at the end of the run.

For repeated long runs, compare a Makita electric gun with the manual gun using the same nozzle opening. Check cartridge fit, feed control and stopping behaviour first.

Scope the first job

Write down what you will remove, what you will apply and when the area can be used again. Count travel, protection and clean-up time. Check local requirements for trading and insurance. A shower with concealed damage is a poor first practice job.

When preparing a fresh cartridge, use the Stanley knife as instructed. Cut the nozzle away from your fingers. This cartridge tool is not a scraper for glass, fabric or a shower tray.

Record what changes between attempts

Make two identical samples and change only travel speed. After the specified cure, compare bead thickness in the middle and at the end. Note where your wrist lacked support. Use that observation to plan access and explain the time required.

Dry-fit the FUGENFUX profiling tool. Choose the edge that meets both sides without scooping out the middle, then tool the bead before a skin forms.

How do I know if my sample worked?

Keep a reference and inspect the edges after the stated cure. Ask for a specific preparation, shape or dosing fault before repeating the exercise.
